Requirements for Special Procedures Tech Positions

The most common way to enter this field is to get an associate’s degree in radiology. Some people choose to get a bachelor’s degree. Graduates of accredited programs are eligible to take the four-hour certification examination offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Many employers will only hire certified technologists. Licensing requirements for radiologic technologists vary by state.

SPTs may monitor and document the patients’ vital signs such as blood pressure and respiration and enter that information directly into a computer that controls testing procedures. Some special procedures technologists can assist with CT scanning, MRI's, Angiograms, Cardiac Catheterization and other tests.
