Specialty Requirements

Most employers require a bachelor's degree in nuclear medicine technology. Alternatively, a 12-month certificate program can meet the educational requirement, provided the candidate has an undergraduate degree in a related field. Additional certification may be required depending on the state. Among other functions, a Nuclear Medicine Tech may perform organ imaging tests, such as skeletal, cardiac blood pool, and major vascular blood pool. They will inject radiopharmaceuticals under the direct supervision of a radiologist and subsequently monitor the patient to check for unusual reactions. They will check scanners to ensure that they are working properly and keep thorough procedural records.
