Specialty Requirements

A Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education-accredited  education program and pass a state licensure exam. Occupational Therapists must earn a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) or the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (AOTE) certified school. State licensure is also required. The requirements for PTAs and COTAs will differ, with education requirements being somewhat less lengthy. 

Some therapy employers require a given amount of clinical experience prior to hire, while others do not. Additional certifications may be required, depending upon the hiring facility and the requirements of the position.
