Nuclear medicine technologists use a scanner to create images of a patient's body. They prepare radioactive drugs and administer them to patients undergoing scans which cause designated areas of the body to appear different from normal areas in the images.

Specialty Requirements

Most employers require a bachelor's degree in nuclear medicine technology. Alternatively, a 12-month certificate program can meet the educational requirement, provided the candidate has an undergraduate degree in a related field. Additional certification may be required depending on the state. Nuclear Medicine Techs should have good interpersonal and critical thinking skills.

Among other functions, a Nuclear Medicine Tech may perform organ imaging tests, such as skeletal, cardiac blood pool, and major vascular blood pool. They will inject radiopharmaceuticals under the direct supervision of a radiologist and subsequently monitor the patient to check for unusual reactions. They will check scanners to ensure that they are working properly and keep thorough procedural records.
